Good news for LorneJanuary 2, 2016
A special Otways Bush Fire Update Meeting was held yesterday (30/12/2015) at the Lorne Surf Life Saving Club, led by Craig Lapsley – Emergency Management Commissioner and Andrew Crisp – Deputy Commissioner, Victoria Police, assisted by Committee for Lorne, attended by leaders of Lorne retail and accommodation businesses, Lorne Hospital and Lorne community and sports groups, including Friends of Lorne.
We were relieved to hear that the bush fire threat to Lorne has temporarily receded due to improved weather conditions and continuing land and aerial bush fire containment works.
Craig Lapsley stated that forecast weather conditions will alleviate the current fire risk to Lorne for the next 4 to 7 days, and possibly longer, dependent on no new fires starting between Kennett River and Lorne and consistency of predicted weather conditions
Craig Lapsley praised the heroic work of the Surf Coast CFA and integrated emergency support teams, highlighting the commitment by the Victorian Government to support and do whatever it takes to protect communities along the Great Ocean Road from bush fires.
Presently there are no plans to evacuation Lorne.
About 800 people at the community meeting yesterday in the Cumberland Lorne Conference Centre.
